Yagami Library Shelf

English

We designed a shelf for displaying newly arrived books at the Media Center for Science and Technology at Keio University’s Yagami Campus. We aim to turn the “new arrivals corner” into a lively place for incoming students.

The previous new arrivals corner often failed to attract the students’ interest. The height of the previous bookshelf was lower than the eye level and the books were placed showing their spines. We worked on various solutions for seeking a design that attracts interest and makes the book covers visible, but at the same type not creating a visual barrier towards the exterior. We created a permeable wall-like shelf that allows for various layouts and book arrangements.

The display shelf is composed of plywood panels, bolted together so that the panels can freely rotate. We designed custom-made book stands that can be placed freely on the panels. We added benches at the foot of the shelf, which can be used in a variety of situations, such as sitting and reading, temporarily displaying books, or placing plants. By using standard sizes of ready available larch plywood for both the panels and the benches, we managed to keep the price down.

Like a lively plaza surrounded by books, this display shelf embraces the students entering the media center.(or K-truck in Japanese).
