Three hundred chairs

English

This is a winning project for the 2015 street furniture competition in Yokohama, Japan. The goal of this competition was to make Yokohama more enjoyable through urban furniture. We propose to put movable chairs and tables in “Yokohama Red Brick Square”. It is a famous sightseeing spot, but the square is often empty and becomes a place for just walking through. In order to give opportunities to people to stay at the square, we proposed to put three hundred chairs. We made unique and attractive chairs by holding a workshop with citizens, who painted discarded school chairs. On Jan. 2016, we put thirty tables and one hundred twenty chairs in Red Brick Square as a social experiment, and manage to create a lively space where many people gathered.

Since 1970 Jan Gehl, William Whyte and other urban researchers confirmed that spaces in which people can stay are important to generate liveliness. However, in Japan there are few benches or other sitting opportunities at public spaces. In addition, it is difficult to put movable chairs in public spaces because of the excessive concern from the administrators about safety and management. Since many people gathered and there was no particular trouble during this social experiment, we hope that this project can be seen as a good precedent for a more active use of public space in Japan.
