The kotatsu is a heater attached to the underside of a low table frame, covered by a heavy blanket or futon and a table top. It is also a device for making the family gather in Japanese cold winters. A typical kotatsu is small, but in this project it becomes large enough to become a public place for exhibitions, debates and meetings, with the intimate, familiar and relaxed feeling of sharing heat under the futon. We built a public kotatsu 4.50 m long by 1.80 m wide, placing flowers, warm tea and sweets, and several exhibition materials. Visitors sit around, drink tea, talk and know each other. This public kotatsu connects visitors through objects, food, and the relaxed and familiar feeling of the kotatsu.
